Justice for Joan Sebastián Durán Guerrero! Counter Trump’s Fascist Attacks on Migrants!
On July 14 U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) shot and killed Joan Sebastián Durán Guerrero in Biddeford, Maine. Durán was the father of Dulce (three-years old) and husband of Karolina Rojas. The International Women's Alliance is outraged at the continued violence being enacted on migrants across the world and recognizes the devastating impacts these attacks have on families for years to come. IWA denounces the deployment of ICE agents who act as nothing more than goons and hired guns for the fascist Trump regime and their imperialist interests. We echo demands extended by Durán's family, legal team, and the government of Colombia to hold ICE accountable and for a thorough and just investigation into the events that led to Durán's murder.
Initially the Department of Homeland Security claimed that Durán was targeted because of a warrant for his detention - it was later clarified this was not the case and he was targeted by mistake. As a migrant father his life revolved around his daughter - making time to take Dulce to the park every afternoon despite busy work schedules. During a press conference, Rojas recalled Durán's excitement to see Dulce grow up and start school; wanting to ensure that he was a strong part of his daughter's life.
Durán is the eleventh person killed by ICE agents outside detention in 2026. ICE's high rate of fatalities are a result of their ability to act with impunity. Many ICE agents have backgrounds in military service, with the agency gaining a reputation for recruiting men who are unstable and have been previously found unfit to work in law enforcement. The ruling elite of the United States have created a fascist anti-people force who act above the law and carry out the whims of the Trump Administration. The agent who killed Durán has been identified as David Brouillette who, according to his two ex-wives and estranged family, has a history of violent behavior of domestic violence and violent outbursts towards his children. His family also noted that his service in the US military worsened his temper and volatility, saying that his time in the military during the war on Afghanistan "trained him to be a killing monster, a machine. They took someone who was extremely mentally ill and turned him into a killing machine.” Brouillette has since struggled to hold down a steady job due to mental illness and PTSD - but was hired by ICE in 2025. Brouillette is a further example of how ICE attracts vulnerable, volatile and violent men and recruits them to serve as goons for the Trump Regime. This didn't start and doesn't end with the Trump regime, as U.S. militarism incites violence globally with the beginning of the vicious cycle being instituted domestically.
During a press conference, Benjamin Gideon, the lawyer representing Durán's family, raised the following question: “Do we accept the idea that innocent, loving partners and loving and devoted fathers of 3-year-olds can be collateral damage to this government’s policies?” In a world where women and children are too-often the ones bearing the brunt of government neglect, state violence, war, and militarism - Durán's murder is a startling reminder that women and children are also victimized when their husbands, fathers, and brothers are targeted and killed. In the world order that the US is desperately trying to maintain the majority of people are seen and treated as collateral damage - whether that be the men sent to war who return to limited social services or support for PTSD; the migrant fathers who are criminalized and killed on their way to work; or the wives and children who face loss, trauma, and heartache that will never go away. The International Women's Alliance calls for all members and allies to continue to oppose US fascist attacks against migrants, to forge unity and advance the fight to end US imperialism and war across the world that has led to too-many instances of loss that cannot ever be recovered. Only by uniting and fighting for alternative systems that restore dignity; provide services; and protect the innocent can we truly see fascism brought to its knees.

Justicia para Joan Sebastián Durán Guerrero! Enfrentemos los ataques fascistas de Trump contra los migrantes!
El 14 de julio, el Servicio de Inmigración y Control de Fronteras de EE. UU. (ICE) disparó y mató a Joan Sebastián Durán Guerrero en Biddeford, Maine. Durán era el papá de Dulce (de tres años) y esposo de Karolina Rojas. La Alianza Internacional de Mujeres está indignada por la violencia continua que se ejerce contra los migrantes en todo el mundo y reconoce los impactos devastadores que estos ataques tienen en las familias durante muchos años. La IWA denuncia el despliegue del ICE, quienes no son más que matones y sicarios al servicio del régimen fascista de Trump y sus intereses imperialistas. Nos sumamos a las demandas de la familia de Durán, su equipo legal y el gobierno de Colombia para que el ICE rinda cuentas y se lleve a cabo una investigación exhaustiva y justa sobre los hechos que condujeron el asesinato de Durán.
Inicialmente, el Departamento de Seguridad Nacional afirmó que Durán fue detenido debido a una orden de aprehensión; posteriormente se aclaró que ese no era el caso y que fue detenido por error. Como padre migrante, su vida giraba en torno a su hija: tomaba tiempo para llevar a Dulce al parque todas las tardes a pesar de sus apretados horarios de trabajo. Durante una conferencia de prensa, Rojas recordó la emoción de Durán por ver crecer a Dulce y verla comenzar la escuela; su deseo de asegurarse de ser una parte importante en la vida de su hija.
Durán es la undécima persona asesinada por agentes del ICE fuera de un centro de detención en 2026. La elevada tasa de muertes provocadas por el ICE es consecuencia de su capacidad para actuar con impunidad. Muchos agentes del ICE tienen antecedentes en el servicio militar, y la agencia se ha ganado la reputación de reclutar a hombres inestables que anteriormente han side declarados no aptos para trabajar en las fuerzas de seguridad. La élite gobernante de Estados Unidos ha creado una fuerza fascista y antipopular que actúa por encime de la ley y cumple los caprichos de la administración de Trump. El agente que mató a Durán ha sido identificado como David Brouillette, quien, según sus dos exesposas y su familia, con la que no tiene relación, tiene un historial de comportamiento violento, incluyendo violencia doméstica y arrebatos violentos hacia sus hijos. Su familia también señaló que su servicio en el ejército de EE. UU. empeoró su temperamento y su inestabilidad, afirmando que su paso por las fuerzas armadas durante la guerra en Afganistán "lo entrenó para ser un monstruo asesino, una máquina. Tomaron a alguien que padecía una enfermedad mental grave y los convirtieron en una máquina de matar". Desde entonces, Brouillette ha tenido dificultades para mantener un empleo estable debido a su enfermedad mental y al trastorno de estrés postraumático (TEPT), pero fue contratado por el ICE en 2025. Brouillette es un ejemplo más de cómo el ICE atrae a hombres vulnerables, volátiles y violentos, y los recluta para que actúen como matones del régimen de Trump. Esto no comenzó ni termina con el régimen de Trump, ya que el militarismo estadounidense incita a la violencia a nivel mundial, y el inicio de este círculo vicioso se está instaurando a nivel nacional.
Durante una conferencia de prensa, Benjamin Gideon, el abogado que representa a la familia de Durán, planteó la siguiente pregunta: "¿Aceptamos la idea de que parejas inocentes y amorosas, y padres cariñosos y dedicados de niños de 3 años, puedan ser daños colaterales de las políticas de este gobierno?" En un mundo en el que las mujeres y los niños son, con demasiada frecuencia, quienes soportan el peso de la negligencia gubernamental, la violencia de Estado, la guerra y el militarismo, el asesinato de Durán es un recordatorio impactante de que las mujeres y los niños también son víctimas cuando sus esposos, padres y hermanos son blanco de ataques y asesinados. En el orden mundial que Estados Unidos intenta mantener a toda costa, a la mayoría de las personas se las considera y trata como daños colaterales —ya sean los hombres enviados a la guerra que regresan y solo cuentan con servicios sociales limitados o apoyo para el trastorno de estrés postraumático; los padres migrantes que son criminalizados y asesinados de camino al trabajo; o las esposas e hijos que enfrentan pérdidas, traumas y un dolor que nunca desaparecerá. La Alianza Internacional de Mujeres hace un llamado a todos sus miembros y aliados para que sigan oponiéndose a los ataques fascistas de EE. UU. contra los migrantes, forjen la unidad y impulsen la lucha para poner fin al imperialismo estadounidense y a la guerra en todo el mundo, que han provocado demasiados casos de pérdidas irreparables. Solo uniéndonos y luchando por sistemas alternativos que restauren la dignidad, brinden servicios y protejan a los inocentes podremos ver verdaderamente cómo el fascismo se derrumba.
