Women Unite to Build a Stronger International Movement for Human Rights!
The International Women’s Alliance joins with all struggling people of the world in commemorating International Human Rights Day, December 10. This day marks 77 years since the passage of the UN Declaration on Human Rights, which outlines the “inalienable” rights of all people of the world in order to survive. According to the declaration, these rights are the foundation of “freedom, justice and peace in the world”. However, under the global capitalist system and the resurgence of fascism around the world, the need for the international community to uphold this declaration is more dire than ever.
The global population can generally be divided into two main categories: the ruling elite and the oppressed masses, and these human rights are only enjoyed by the ruling elite who uphold and protect their own interests. The hard-hitting truth of the matter is that while there is recognition of our human rights, these rights are consistently violated, trampled on, and ignored. People, especially women and children, are deprived of any rights which gives rise to more authoritarianism. The world’s powers continue to prioritize profits over the rights, dignity and livelihood of the people; creating circumstances where it is impossible to genuinely uphold human rights for the majority. It is clear that the human rights meant to improve the lives of the majority of people are really only reserved for the minority ruling elite.
2025 saw a dramatic escalation in violence against women and children which exposed that the nations of the world are a far cry from upholding the rights and dignity of women and their communities. This year we saw women lose access to critical life-saving aid programs which led to higher maternal mortality rates, malnutrition, and loss of opportunities for education. At the root of the crisis of violence is imperialist domination and control over land, resources, and people, which exacerbates people’s poverty while violating their rights on a global scale. Still, many governments use the rhetoric of “providing safety and security for women and children” as a pretense for more militarization, authoritarian rule, and U.S. imperialist intervention (as was the case with the women in Afghanistan, Iraq and Libya in the early 2000’s).
From Sudan to Ecuador, Palestine and the Philippines, Indonesia and the United States, women are rising up in the fight back against imperialist control and domination that is at the root of the violation of their inalienable right to live in dignity, in peace and with justice. The global women’s movement must stand together with all oppressed people of the world who are actively fighting back against repression, tyranny, and the onslaught of attacks by their governments and U.S. imperialist aggression. We must stand together against the perpetrators of violence and continue to decry the egregious human rights violations imposed onto us by this rotten and corrupt global capitalist system that continues to only uphold the rights and dignity of the few, while dehumanizing the rest of us.
