81 Years After the Atomic Bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki: Oppose US-led War and Military Aggression!

The International Women's Alliance recognizes the historical significance of August 6, as the 81st anniversary of the US' nuclear bombing of Hiroshima, followed three days later by the US' bombing of Nagasaki. By the end of 1945 over half the population had died from the bombing and impacts of radiation. Of the over 200,000 civilians killed in the US attack it is estimated that 38,000 were children, and an estimated 22,000 were Korean migrants who have moved to Japan to escape economic hardship in their homeland. Today the long-term effects of radiation still linger as rates of cancer, generational genetic impacts, and birth defects have increased and the land is still heavily impacted by the toxic radiation. The scars held by Hiroshima and Nagasaki serve as an unavoidable and stark reminder that the cost of imperialist war is always the lives of the innocent.

IWA also joins the indignation expressed by the surviving Hibakusha (Japanese Term used for those who survived the bombings in 1945) and their families for the atrocities committed by the US government and the refusal of the Japanese government to fully recognize and compensate all survivors of the bombings. IWA condemns the US's continued use of nuclear threats as fodder to justify attacks on sovereign nations like Iran and North Korea while still being the only country to have ever used a nuclear weapon as a tool of war. We demand the US stop manufacturing narratives around the threat of nuclear bombs as a justification for war and attacks which only lead to more civilian casualties, more displaced families, and more destabilization.

The US remains the largest military power in the world today. Their hands are stained with the blood of millions of civilians who have been the victims of US-led war, US proxy war, US-backed puppet dictatorships, and US sanctions since the bombs were dropped on Japan. With outsized military budgets, an over-reliance on the production of weapons and other military armaments, and the continued use of unequal military agreements and war games - IWA calls for all freedom loving people to oppose the US's ongoing war mongering and to join together to oppose US-led war around the world! We must continue to oppose US-led wars in all their forms and to draw attention to the human cost of imperialist aggression.
