GABRIELA Hong Kong Celebrates 16th Anniversary with a Call to Action Against Corruption and Violence

November 23, 2025 – GABRIELA Hong Kong marked its 16th anniversary with a vibrant celebration at Chater Road, coinciding with the International Day to Eliminate Violence Against Women. The event drew approximately 300 attendees from various supportive organizations, focusing on the theme “Strengthening Women’s Voices Against Poverty, Corruption, and Impunity,” addressing the rampant corruption within the Philippine government.

The celebration featured a singing contest titled “Tinig ng Kababaihan,” themed “Women Empowerment.” Nine overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) showcased their talents, with Grace Arellano from the Grand Ilocandia Matatag Eagles Organization taking the first place, followed by Annabel Colon Dagosina from Tropang Angat in second, and Haireen Velasco Imbag in third.

GABRIELA HK members also competed in group presentations and best-dressed competitions, illustrating the pressing issues of corruption and lack of accountability among government officials. The GABRIELA Chater Road Chapter was awarded “Best Dressed Group” for their creative efforts.

Additionally, as part of the celebration, GABRIELA HK initiated a door-to-door donation drive for the victims of recent typhoons in the Philippines under its “Operasyon Migrante Sagip Kababayan” (OMSK) initiative. They also provided free health services, including blood glucose and blood pressure checks, courtesy of the Mission for Migrant Workers, while UMELA HK offered free massages.

Various alliances and local supporters extended their congratulations to GABRIELA HK during the event. Edwina Antonio, director of Bethune House Women Refuge, graced the celebration as the guest speaker. She highlighted the plight of the 390,000 foreign domestic workers in Hong Kong, with 98% being women, who are compelled to work abroad due to poverty and unemployment to support their families.

Antonio passionately addressed the issue of corruption, stating that while many sacrifice their well-being for their families, an estimated one trillion pesos are lost annually to corrupt practices, depriving citizens of essential services such as health care, education, and disaster relief.

In closing the anniversary celebration, GABRIELA HK chairperson Shiela Tebia expressed gratitude to all participants and reaffirmed the alliance’s commitment to stand with the Filipino community against unjust government policies. She announced their active participation in the upcoming November 30, 2025, Bonifacio Day rally against corruption.
