The International Women’s Alliance honors the Mirabal sisters who were martyred on November 25, 1960, by the fascist dictatorship of Rafael Trujillo of the Dominican Republic. Their martyrdom is a reminder of their bravery as revolutionary women who fought to topple Trujillo’s 30 year long reign of terror against the people of the Dominican Republic, especially women. Every year, women around the world commemorate November 25 as the International Day to Eliminate Violence Against Women (IDEVAW) drawing inspiration from the Mirabal Sister’s strength and courage to confront the state.
As an alliance of women's organizations fighting on the frontlines against violence, exploitation, militarization, and oppression - IWA recognizes the importance of the many days in November and December which acknowledge the violence and atrocities brought against women, LGBTQ+, and children in this anti-people global system.
This year, IWA is calling on all our members, friends, and sisters in the struggle to wage “Weeks of Action to Eliminate Violence Against Women and Children” from November 20-December 10th. By mobilizing, conducting education, and exposing more women around the world to the need to organize we hope to contribute to the growing fervor for change and movements against fascism and tyranny in all their forms.
